Employer-sponsored PHRs appear to address some of the issues that have kept PHRs from becoming mainstream: providing someone to pay for the service (consumers don’t seem to want to), and now auto-populating the data fields. Still, despite Dell and IBM outsourcing the PHR to WebMD I’m not sure they are really dealing with the other big problem: trust.
Finally, by linking the PHR to employment they are detracting from the portability of the health record (unless they are dealing with that in a way that hasn’t been mentioned in the press.) It’s bad enough that health insurance is tied to employment; I wouldn’t want to see PHRs added to the list. Perhaps the employer-sponsored era will be a transient phase in the maturity of PHRs.
