I have worked in a hospital lab, and I can speak from personal experience in confirming that unnecessary labwork is completed ALL THE TIME. (I mean, here in the States… I don’t know about in Viet Nam.). Sometimes it is an oversight, sometimes it is well-intentioned overkill, sometimes it is part of an overarching protocol for a specific ailment that ought not apply to an individual patient, and of course sometimes it is simply due to someone’s incompetence. Regardless of the cause, the hospital’s ability to bill the patient’s insurance leads to a general lack of will among bean counters to change anything appreciably.
